A record number of runners took part in the Matalan Merseyside 10K yesterday (Sunday), which took place on a route within the grounds of Aintree Racecourse, home to the famous Grand National.

First to cross the finish line was Dejene Gezimu from Liverpool Harriers in an impressive time of 31 minutes and 26 seconds, followed closely by Gareth Raven who finished in 31 minutes and 29 seconds. Adam Slodowicz from Salford Harriers took third place with a time of 31 minutes and 53 seconds.

Catherine Howard of Knowsley Harriers was the first female to cross the finish line in 36 minutes and 36 seconds, followed by Kirsty Longley of Liverpool Pembroke and Sefton Harriers who finished in 37 minutes and one second and Elisabeth Kilcourse of Chorlton Runners took third place in 39 minutes and 32 seconds.

The 10K race passed some of the most famous and iconic names in British horseracing history including The Chair and Becher’s Brook, Red Rum and the Winning Post, and along Melling Road.

Kevin Harmer, UK Events and Sponsorship Manager for the race commented: “It was a fantastic turn out of runners and supporters yesterday. It was a brilliant atmosphere, the sun was shining and it was great to see so many runners raising money for important causes. People of all ages and abilities took part and we would like to thank everyone for making the effort.”

The Mayor of Sefton, Councillor Brodie-Browne started the race and attended the awards presentations following the race. Following the 10K race, a 400m Toddler Trot took place for children under 8.

Many runners were raising money for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, this year’s official charity partner, as well as their own chosen charities.

Matalan was this year’s official event partner, and the race was also supported by Rippleffect, who were sponsoring the Corporate Cup Challenge as well as Therapy First and Nature Valley.
