See the World – Run a City Marathon!

Running a marathon is one of the most challenging yet fulfilling experiences you can ever have in and of itself.

But if you’re like thousands of other runners out there who don’t just run to keep fit or break their personal best, you’ll know that running is also a fantastic way to explore the world around us. And what better way to do this and discover vibrant new locations than by combining the exhilaration of a marathon with a break to an iconic city?

At Sports Tours International we’re experts on all-things running and travel, and have been for decades! So when it comes to City Marathons we like to think we know what we’re talking about!

Here are just a few of the amazing City Marathons we’ve got coming up:

Athens Marathon 2016

1) Athens Authentic Marathon 2019

Ah, the place where it all began!

Every year thousands of avid runners descend on the birthplace of the modern long-distance run – Athens!

In 490BC, legendary figure Pheidippedes ran from Marathon (yes – that’s where that comes from!) to Athens to deliver news of the Greek victory over the Persians in The Battle of Marathon. With the appropriately-titled Athens Authentic Marathon, you too can run this iconic route that played an integral part in Greek history and the history of running as a whole!

Plus, along with all the stunning classic sights the city has to offer, your race will end in arguably the single most important sporting venue in the world – the Athens Olympic Stadium which held the very first Olympic Games of the modern era in 1896.

The Hotel Airethon Parthenon at the centre of the city is ideally situated for your run, easily accessible and perfect for those looking to explore this gorgeous city steeped in history! Naturally, your stay will include breakfast and 3-course evening meals! We can’t let our runners go hungry!

A perfect destination for those looking to tackle a brand new marathon challenge and create their own Greek mythology story!

2) ASICS Stockholm Marathon 2019

The Swedes seem to be leading the way in so many areas nowadays – turns out they’ve hit the nail on the head with marathons, too! The ASICS Stockholm Marathon shares its immense success with the New York City Marathon which was a massive influence on the creation of the event.

Sports journalist Anders Olsson organised what would become the Stockholm Marathon all the way back in 1979 and it’s still going strong today! Given just how incredible the Swedish scenery is, and the city as a whole in fact, it’s no wonder just how popular the annual event has become with both locals and tourists alike.

Stockholm is built on an archipelago (that’s a large group of islands to you and me!) surrounding the medieval city centre and is widely recognised as being one of the most classically-beautiful cities in Europe. And it’s all within a reasonable travelling distance, wherever you are. Meaning you can cover plenty of ground and see all the awe-inspiring beauty of the country during your stay.

This is a reasonably easy-to-handle marathon compared to a lot of others, so if you feel you’re a little out of practice, don’t worry! Plus, there’s a practice 5k run the day before to get your legs back in the game!

3) Washington Marine Corps Marathon 2019

Most marathons have an interesting story and history, but this one is particularly notable thanks to its relationship with war veterans and the American military community. In 1975, Colonel James L Fowler created the marathon to promote goodwill between the military and the post-Vietnam community during a time when there was still much tension surrounding the subject of the Vietnam War.

Not only this, but the race was also conceived to help raise money for injured military personnel, particularly Marines. With such a sense of patriotism surrounding the marathon and its creation, it makes all the sense in the world it takes place in such an important location in American culture and history – Washington D.C.

The affectionately titled “Marathon of Monuments” takes you past all the essential Washington sites like the Washington Monument and other instantly-recognisable destinations.

The general distance is 10K, but for 2019 we’ve introduced a staggering 50k route for those looking for a real challenge! And after all is said and done, you can return to the hotel before heading out for a celebratory drink in a local bar – you’ve earned it!

Book now for a real taste of American history!

TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2017

4) TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2019

Amsterdam is consistently ranked as one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Europe with good reason!

The cultural capital of the Netherlands, the city is (or has been) home to some of the most influential figures and businesses the world over including artist Vincent Van Gough, Anne Frank and the European headquarters of Netflix and Tesla to name but a few.

Given the city’s gloriously preserved sense of classic 17th century style, it’s no wonder the city is so popular with runners! With our Amsterdam Marathon trip you can experience all this epic city has to offer, including the start and finish line in the Olympic Stadium, the passage through the Rijksmuseum, the stretch along the Amstel River and running through the wonderful Vondelpark. You’ll have the choice of a full marathon, half marathon or 8K, so there’s something to suit every experience level.

There will be plenty of time to experience the magnificence of the city away from the run. Oh, and don’t forget about your very own VIP Pasta Party the day before the big race!
