Spring into Summer Training – Events to Look Forward to in 2021

The days are getting longer, the wind is losing its chill, and the daffodils are out. That can only mean one thing, it’s finally happened … Spring has sprung.

It’s time to put away the hats, gloves and base layers, and look forward to summer!

This year, there’s more reason than ever to put in those quality summer miles. The autumn marathon calendar for 2021 is absolutely stacked! Loads of the big events we know and love are making a comeback and, here at Sports Tours International, we simply can’t wait!

So, to get you in the mood for some summer training and planning for the season ahead, here’s our rundown of a few of the world- class Half and Full Marathons, that we know will make the 2021 autumn marathon season one to remember!

ICELAND VOLCANO HALF AND FULL MARATHON

WHY?

We are delighted, at Sports Tours International, to have hugely increased our range of trail and adventure marathons for the 2021 season. Trail and adventure races are less about the time it takes to complete the course than they are about enjoying the time you spend ON the course, and the Iceland Volcano half or full marathon is the perfect example of that. The route takes you on a journey through an incredible and almost untouched geothermal landscape. The massive Hverfjall crater is a wonderful focus point on the route as are the ethereal lava fields known as Dimmuborgir, or “Dark Fortress.”  With optional excursions and extensions available, and the choice of quarter, half or full marathon race, you can really make this once in a lifetime trip your own.

GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON

When 22nd August 2021 

WHY? 

Berlin has to be one of Europe’s most varied and interesting cities. From a lively arts and music scene, to rich cultural and political history, there is something for everyone to enjoy in the German capital. Our Berlin Marathon weekend is the perfect city break, combined with a brilliant race opportunity, and could be the perfect trip for all the family. The course of the half marathon itself takes you past some of Germany’s most iconic landmarks, including passing through the Brandenburg Gate itself in the finishing straight. Joe, one of our regular reps, had this to say about his Berlin Half Marathon experience.

“It’s a fascinating feeling running through the iconic Brandenburg Gate on the home straight of the route. The crowds are packed either side of the road in their thousands and create a brilliant atmosphere to encourage people to give it one last push to the finish line. This really is a spectacular running experience and a brilliant way to finish the route.”

PARIS HALF MARATHON

When? 5th September 2021

WHY?

The Paris Half Marathon offers both a flat, fast route and the ultimate sight seeing tour around the City of Light, all in one great event! The atmosphere in Paris is always incredible, and the climate in early September should offer fantastic running conditions. With upwards of 40,000 runners on the course, and live musical entertainment along the route, there is sure to be enough energy to motivate you to a great race. The new course both starts and finishes right in the iconic city centre, which only adds to the brilliant race day buzz. However, just as with previous editions of the race, you will be able to see all the most famous sights of the city as you run. Highlights of the course include, Bastille, Rue de Rivoli, Hôtel de Ville, Quais de Seine, the Bois de Vincennes and its Château, and Pont de Tolbiac.

Awesome Autumn Marathons 

Medoc Marathon 

When? 11th September 2021 

WHY?

The Medoc Marathon is about celebrating all things the good life! This is not just a race; this is a party! It’s compulsory fancy dress, it’s wine and local delicacies like cheese and oysters at the aid stations. It’s about having the best time possible, on a beautiful course through the vineyards of France. The Medoc Marathon is always a sell out event. People flock from around the world to take part in this truly unique running extravaganza. The theme (and dress code) for the 2021 Medoc Marathon is cinema. This is a race you have to see (and take part in) to believe!

THE GREAT WALL MARATHON

When? 25th September 2021 

WHY?

Established in 1999, the Great Wall Marathon is the original adventure marathon experience. This course includes segments on the goat trail as well as a climb up over 5000 steps on the Great Wall of China itself. The Great Wall is without a doubt one of the world’s greatest feats of human engineering as well as a bucket list tourist site. You can combine one of the world’s top destinations with one of the world’s most sought after adventure marathons with the Great Wall Marathon this autumn. BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON

When? 10th October 2021 

WHY?

Autumn 2021 is destined to be pretty MAJOR as far as marathon running is concerned. All 6 of the Abbott Marathon Majors are currently due to take place in a matter of just weeks! The Bank of America Chicago Marathon will be the third major to take place in 2021, following Berlin and London. Chicago is well-known for its bold architecture, bristling skyscraper skyline and iconic landmarks such as the Tribune Tower and the John Hancock Center. Renowned for its art galleries and museums, the city of Chicago is bursting with things to keep you busy. Whether you explore the depths of the ocean at the Shedd Aquarium, take in a show at The Chicago Theatre or ride the Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier, there is always something on offer in this wonderful city. From deep dish pizza to Chiacgo style hotdogs, there are plenty of local and iconic treats to look forward to after your race. The Marathon itself is one of the fastest in the world, and since Brigid Kosgei’s 2019 run, home of the women’s marathon world record!

TOKYO MARATHON

When? 17th October 2021

WHY?

The world’s newest, and the only Marathon Major to take place in Asia, the Tokyo Marathon returns this Autumn after almost a 2 year absence! There is a real appetite for distance running in Japan. The top marathoners are among the most famous sports stars of the country. The Tokyo Marathon is notoriously difficult to get into. The ballot is heavily over subscribed and there are very few ‘good for age’ places available. However, you can guarantee your place on the start line with packages from Sports Travel International. The big race in the Big Apple. The TCS New York City Marathon is without a doubt one of the most iconic running events in the world. 2021 will see the 50th edition of the event, and it will not be a running engagement to miss!  The course of the New York City Marathon takes you on a wonderful whirlwind tour. As you run you will pass through all 5 of the cities boroughs (Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Manhattan), each of which has its own character, energy, and of course crowds, before finishing in the legendary Central Park.

ATHENS AUTHENTIC MARATHON

When? 14th November 2021 

WHY?

Because we can’t talk about the world’s best marathons without mentioning where it all began. To say that Athens has a strong marathon pedigree is somewhat of an understatement. According to legend, ancient Greek herald Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Sparta (around 150 miles), to request military aid in the battle of Marathon, before running back to the battlefield (another 150 miles). After the battle, he ran a further 25 miles, to Athens, to announce Greek victory. His last words are said to be “we have won”. It was also here, in 1896, that the marathon was revived for the first modern Olympic games. The current marathon course follows that original Olympic route from the ancient city of Marathon to Athens Olympic Stadium, where a finish worthy of champions awaits!
