Mass Participation Events Set to Come Back Stronger in 2022

Mass participation events have been sorely missed over the last 18 months. As restrictions kicked in, and it became clear that it wasn’t safe to take part in events with thousands of fellow athletes, lock-down meant the community had to get creative.

Several of the events you know and love moved to a virtual model. Events such as Haute Route Wattopia and the Virtual London Marathon meant that you could, to some extent avoid missing out. Many events were cancelled however, or at best postponed until deemed safe to host. Now, with the announcement that mass participation events are making a comeback, we’re sure they will return even stronger in 2022.

Come Back Time

As restrictions lifted in the UK on July 19, a number of events were able to return within in the same week. With scientific research demonstrating that COVID-19 is less transmittable outdoors, the likes of This Mum Runs community, parkrun and ASICS London 10k are all able to make imminent safe returns, with addition measures in place to ensure the safety of all.

Several of the world renowned marathon majors will make their comeback in just a few short months! Berlin is first in late September, before London just a week later. The 50th edition of the iconic New York City Marathon will round off the year in November.

Here at Sports Tours International, our charitable foundation, The Running Bee Foundation, are very much looking forward to the return of their most iconic event. Often touted as ‘the most challenging multi day running event in England’, the Tour of Tameside will return between 29th of July and 1st August 2021, bringing 4 days of spectacular and varied racing to the North- West of England.

The tour consists of 4 races of varying lengths spread across 4 days. There’s the Cross Trail 10 k, the aptly names Hell on the Fell, the NHS Heroes Half Marathon, and then finally the Dr Ron Hill 7 miler on the Sunday.

ITV News Journalist, Teresa McMahon, who is running her first Full Tour of Tameside this year as part of team GMCR, said,

“I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve heard so many great things. I’m doing all four races, so I’m a bit nervous, but it should be great! I just hope it isn’t too hot.”

This year’s tour  will be even more poignant than ever before, not only because we missed out on it last year, but also because it will of course evoke memories of the late, great Dr Ron Hill, who founded the Tour back in the eighties. Ron wasn’t just a great athlete and inspiration to thousands of runners across the North West and the world, he was also a great friend, who had been an ambassador for Sports Tours International and The Running Bee Foundation for several years, and who will be greatly missed

Runners, across the country are ready to get back to the events they know, love, and miss. Now is the time to soak up all the achievements haven’t been able to celebrate over the last year. And we’ll be with you every step of the way, as we have been for almost 50 years!

By 2022, running events will undoubtedly come back to its glorious best and better. The appreciation of being able to travel and compete with fellow running enthusiasts will create an atmosphere even more than the ones the community are used to. Reuniting a beloved body of runners after the significant break will showcase how supportive runners are.

DUE TO THE COVID- 19 PANDEMIC

There have been a huge number of entry deferrals and rollovers in the past 12 months. Several events will also be operating with a limited field size. Add to this that runners are biting at the bit to get back to racing, and what do you get? Demand for entries for the 2022 race season is expected to be higher than ever. Entries will be in even shorter supply. Make sure you book early to guarantee your place on the start-line of your dream come back event!
