Why buy travel insurance

In a recent survey it appeared that almost half of British overseas travellers have risked travelling without insurance at some point.

Below you will find some advice and reasons why you should always take out travel insurance at the time you book your holiday.

Travel insurance is not just for travel. It can cover holiday cancellation as well

You should take out adequate travel insurance at the same time as you book your holiday. The deposit you pay to secure your holiday is non-refundable. Most travel insurance policies cover you for holiday cancellation under certain unforeseen circumstances like illness, injury and bereavement. This will mean you can get your deposit and possibly full holiday payment back on your insurance.

The EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), even though a very useful thing to have is not a replacement for travel insurance within the EU.

The EHIC card covers medical treatment in a state hospital of a country signed up to the EHIC scheme which extends to non-EU countries like Switzerland. It is important to note that not every European country has free health care which means that like a resident of that country you may have to pay for certain medical services.

The EHIC card does not cover you for repatriation after a cycling or skiing accident for example and things like being ‘helicoptered off’ or a private ambulance ride are also not covered in countries like France for example so your travel insurance can cover these.

Not disclosing pre-existing medical conditions, no matter how minor and even not connected to the illness or accident you want to claim for, may invalidate your travel insurance.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition like you are taking medication, you have suffered from a certain illness in the past, you have to let your insurers know. If you don’t then this could be seen as you trying to mislead them and you may not be insured.

Travelling to take part in sports

If you plan to take part in sporting activities on holiday like taking part in cycling events or marathons, check that you are covered for those activities. If you are travelling with your bike then check the lost/damaged baggage procedure of the airline that you travel with and the cover for your bike. Some policies ask you to declare the value of the items that you are travelling with in advance. If you are travelling with an expensive bike, it is worth looking into cover for this before you travel.
