Use the winter months wisely to prepare for the spring and summer!

As the cold winter weather approaches and the nights seemingly get darker and darker people can be put off from exercising and put their training on hold until spring comes around. However, by waiting for the spring, crucial preparation months are lost. Moreover, your weight will definitely increase over the winter months if you enjoy too many turkey dinners and festive treats whilst putting your exercise routine on the back burner.

According to the Association of UK Dietitians the average person in the UK could easily consume an extra 500 calories per day in December, resulting in a possible weight gain of around 5lb by the time January comes around. So what can you do to make the most of the winter months?

Going indoors

Hitting the gym throughout the winter months is a popular strategy amongst people in Britain. The opportunity to continue training whilst removing the risk of being exposed to the elements is a key factor in the popularity of why people use gym’s in winter. However, be sure to mix up your training routine as just plodding along on the treadmill can become tedious. Therefore, training at various intensities and using a range of different equipment is essential if you are going to stay motivated throughout the winter whilst training at a gym. Furthermore, be sure to be flexible with the times you train at because if a gym provides you with an opportunity to train in winter it does the same for hundreds of it’s members.  Training at different times of the day will allow you to miss the infamous treadmill congestion.

Wrap up and embrace the cold

Getting some extra layers could be a key factor to escaping the temptation to stop exercising over the winter months. Treating yourself to some new winter gear could persuade you to get out and use it on a regular basis.  A decent waterproof will keep you dry and some thermal baselayers are sure to add warmth to your winter training ritual. Although the winter may seem to be a never ending psychological battle as you trounce through the wind and rain as you try stay active, just think of the benefits you will receive once the winter is over. You’ll be ready for the summer and have the positive feeling knowing that if you can cope with winter you can cope with anything.

Visit a winter training camp

You don’t have to stay on British shores. If you want to train in winter but just can’t bear a crowded gym or embracing the elements. A trip away to a warmer climate could be for you. Training camps offer a great opportunity to prepare for the spring and summer like a pro. They often combine warmer weather with excellent facilities and tailored coaching that is specific to your training needs. Additionally, winter training camps install a positive mind set to the people who use them. This allows them to be mentally and physically prepared for the spring and summer. Winter creates hundreds of cheap flights to the islands that host these training camps as airlines are keen for people to fly to popular summer destinations all year round. Combining winter sun with fantastic facilities could just be the secret to success as you try to keep the Christmas weight gain to a minimum.
