2019 UCI World Tour review

February 2019

The Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is the traditional season opener for the Flemish cobbled cycling season as well as the UCI cycling World Tour as a whole. In 2018 the route was changed to honour the former finale of the Tour of Flanders, including the iconic hills of Muur van Geraardsbergen and Bosberg. The start is in Ghent and the finish will be in the town of Meerbeke which is part of the city of Ninove. The weekend of events includes a whole host of activities around the professional race on the Saturday and a Cyclo for amateur cyclists to take part in on the Sunday.

March 2019

After making its debut on the UCI World Tour calendar in 2017 the Strade Bianche takes place again in Tuscany, Italy (March 9). After this two big stage races take place in the run up to the first big Spring Classic which is Milan San RemoIn March the 2 big stage races are; Paris – Nicealso called the race to the sun and the Tirreno-Adriaticoalso called the race between 2 seas. The one-day clash between the end of Paris-Nice and start of Tirreno-Adriatico continues in 2019. The Milan San Remo (March 23) is the longest one day race on the calendar and traditionally kicks off the classics season in Europe.

In 2019 one of the major Belgian spring classics Gent Wevelgem takes place the weekend before the Tour of Flanders.

April 2019

In April the cycling classics season follows the same date order traditionally with the Tour of Flanders (April 7) which will start in Antwerp and also the Muur van Geraardsbergen will feature on the course again. The Muur will also feature on the 2019 Grand Depart of the Tour de France in Brussels. Next up is the Hell of the North, also called the Queen of the Classics; Paris – Roubaix (April 14) – Our fully supported 10 day Spring Classics tour lets you ride and watch Flanders, Scheldeprijs and Paris – Roubaix. On this tour you will also spend the day with cycling legend Johan Museeuw and visit the Tour of Flanders museum before cycling with Johan in the afternoon.

On Paris – Roubaix we offer a Paris – Roubaix Start to Finish Experience with VIP access at the start in Compiegne followed by a viewing point en-route plus hospitality at the Roubaix Velodrome

Next up are the Ardennes Classics; Amstel Gold race with the Fleche Wallone mid-week on the Wednesday before Liege Bastogne Liege (April 21).

Our 10 day fully supported Ardennes Classics tour lets you ride and watch all the Ardennes Classics.

May – August 2019

The first Grand Tour of the year is the Giro d’Italia which will have its 102nd edition and it takes place between May 10 and June 2. We expect the Giro to start in Bologna and to finish in a different location to the usual Milan or Rome as well. Big mountain stages have been rumoured with the Stelvio and various other big climbs lined up.

The Tour de Yorkshire takes place between 2 and 5 May in 2019. As with the Tour de France the race attracts large crowds and lots of local support. In 2019 the men’s race will be 4 days and the women’s race 2 days, following parts of the 2019 Road World  Championships route. We will offer start and finish hospitality on every stage of the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire.

During the Criterium du Dauphine one month before the start of the Tour de France, the favourites will be battling for position. In June 2018 Geraint Thomas won the 70th Criterium du Dauphine therefore giving Team Sky victory on 6 out of the last 8 editions. Adam Yates who win the last stage into Saint Gervais finished 2nd overall.

The Tour de France takes place between July 6 and 28 in 2019 and it features a start in Brussels to celebrate 50 years since Belgian Eddy Merckx won his first stage. It is also the 100th anniversary of the Yellow Jersey so we expect some activity around this.  On the Tour de France we offer daily VIP experiences at the stage starts and finishes as well as a day in an official car on the course and even helicopter trips. The first British World Tour event, the Ride London-Surrey Classic is taking place on 3 and 4 August, 2019.

The end of the season

The season comes to a close with the final Grand Tour of the year, the Vuelta a España (August 24 to September 15). The 2019 Vuelta a Espana starts in Alicante. The final Monument of Cycling; the Giro Lombardia takes place on Saturday 12 October.

The 2019 UCI Road Cycling World Championships take place in Yorkshire.

Ghent Six Days Track cycling

Our favourite season end is the yearly odyssey to Ghent to watch the Ghent 6 days track cycling event in November. The 2016 edition was fantastic with the win of Wiggins and Cavendish. We offer standard tickets for every night as well as hospitality on the weekend nights. The VIP Cafe is particularly good value for money as the open bar is open from 18.00 until 01.30 on Saturday. Hotel stays are also available or even a coach trip from the UK – More information here
