“So many of the must-see sights are on the MCM (Marine Corps Marathon) course but can also be reached during a visit to the area on foot, by bus, Metrorail or by bike and most are open during MCM Weekend and completely free for visitors to experience. In addition to those landmarks along the National Mall from the Lincoln Memorial to the US Capitol, the MCM course goes past many of highlights of the city. Here’s some for you to enjoy over the marathon weekend:

Marine Corp War Memorial (Iwo Jima)

The U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial represents America’s gratitude to Marines and those who have fought beside them. While the bronze statue depicts one of the most famous battles of World War II, the memorial is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in defence of the United States since 1775. The memorial is open year-round and can be found on Arlington Ridge on the axis of the National Mall, it is also the landmark that all Marine Corps Marathon finishers see as the complete their 26.2-mile mission.
