Autumn 2020 – What can I run?

So, it’s safe to say that the start of the year has not gone to plan. There have been widespread event postponements and cancellations due to the global COVID – 19 pandemic. Restrictions on movement and outdoor activity have also meant that, for many, outdoor endurance training is currently very limited. But it has all been with very good reason. To help slow the spread of the coronavirus; meaning that, as a global active community, we can get to the end of this disaster sooner, and get back to what we love most. The Big Events.

The good news (especially for fans of a full race calendar) is that, with 5 World Marathon Majors, packed in around countless other high profile events, including the landmark 40th running of the Virgin Money London Marathon and 50th edition of the TCS New York City Marathon; it looks like autumn/ winter 2020, is going to be one for runners to remember for a long time!

Here’s all the dates you need to know, of the different events around the world!

SEPTEMBER 2020 

5th: Petra Desert Marathon – Experience the unique and historic UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra while taking on the running challenge of a lifetime! This race offers an unparalleled running adventure, with a course that winds through the breathtaking red sandstone landscape of Jordan.

6th: Paris Half Marathon – The ‘Semi de Paris’ is a World Athletics Bronze Label race which attracts 40,000 runners from across France and wider Europe. Run through the ‘city of love’ this autumn, as you take on the iconic streets of Paris!

12th: Medoc Marathon – Dress up, drink wine, and explore the beautiful countryside of France. Does it get any better than that? Take your place on a marathon that has to be run to be believed – where fancy dress is compulsory and wine is strongly encouraged.

14th: Boston Marathon – This race doesn’t really need an introduction. The oldest annual marathon in the world, and probably one of the toughest to get into, the Boston Marathon has been postponed for 2020, and will now take place on September 14th.

27th: BMW Berlin Marathon – Indisputably one of, if not the, fastest marathon course in the world. The Berlin Marathon has played host to an unprecedented 11 World Record marathon runs. Eliud Kipchoge’s breathtaking 2:01:39 performance shocked and delighted the running world back in 2018, but how far can the record be pushed on this blistering course? 27th: Disneyland Paris Run Weekend – A magical weekend for the whole family, running at the most enchanting venue on earth. Race options include 5k, 10k, half marathon, and 31 and 36k challenges, as well as kids races – so you can get the whole family involved in the running fun!

OCTOBER 2020

4th: Virgin Money London Marathon – Postponed from April 26th the Virgin Money London Marathon is, without a doubt, one of the world’s most famous and sought after marathons. London is also the world’s largest annual fundraising event, having raised well over 1 billion for good causes since its inception in 1981.

11th: Bank of America Chicago Marathon – It was in Chicago, last year, that Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei took over a minute off the women’s mixed race marathon world record, which had previously been held by Paula Radcliffe since 2003. This race offers a flat, fast, exhilarating course through the heart of the ‘windy city’.

18th: Paris Marathon – Postponed from spring, the Paris Marathon is an ever growing event, which now attracts well over 50,000 runners each year. With a start on one of the most famous streets in the world, Les Champs Elysées, The Paris Marathon is a spectacular journey through the City of Light!

18th: TCS Amsterdam Marathon – The Amsterdam Marathon is continually ranked amongst the world’s fastest marathon courses. This flat course starts and finishes in an Olympic Stadium, and offers a wonderful opportunity to PB chasers, and those aiming for a WMM qualifying time.

25th: Washington Marine Corps Marathon – This race started in started in 1975 as a marathon to promote community spirit, and to help raise money for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.  Every year, thousands of runners turn out, to run past the US capital’s most famous landmarks and show their support for the US Marine Corps.

25th: KBC Dublin Marathon – There were a record breaking 22,000 finishers at the 40th edition of the Dublin Marathon in 2019. This is another event that just keeps growing year on year, so 2020 looks like it could be bigger and better than ever before.

NOVEMBER 2020

1st: TCS New York City Marathon The world’s biggest marathon hits the big 50 in 2020, and we expect this milestone birthday to be BIG. At Sports Tours International the TCS New York Marathon has a very special place in our hearts, it was a favourite race of our founder Vince Regan, and we have been making runners big apple dreams come true for over 40 years at this incredible event. 8th: Athens Authentic Marathon – The Legend of the Battle of Marathon itself, and of the superhuman efforts of soldier Pheidippides, who in 490 BC ran from Marathon, make this, the Authentic Athens Marathon, a must do for any real running buff. This course is made doubly historically significant by its finish; at the stadium of the first modern Olympic Games, held in 1896.

28th: Bagan Temple Marathon – Sacred pagodas and beautiful temples scatter plains of Bagan creating a mystical, and striking landscape. In this place like no other, you can run one of the worlds most visually stunning adventure marathons, at the Bagan Temple Marathon 2020, with Sports Tours International. TRAINING FOR YOUR 2020 MARATHON

With the majority of the 2020 marathon season kicking off from September, a standard 12 or 16 week marathon training plan would not need to start until June or July, so there’s no need to get too worried about your race preparation just yet. You could use the coming weeks as a great opportunity to catch up on often neglected strength training. In terms of running the focus should be maintenance. Keep your pre marathon fitness levels high, with plenty of easy training (training at a high intensity can increase risk of injury and compromise the immune system), set a new goal, and then focus on your target ahead.
