Women: 2:20:55 (2017) – Purity Cherotich – Kenya

The first marathon in Paris, the Tour de Paris Marathon, took place way back in 1896. It was held on a 25 mile course, and just 191 runners participated. The Marathon, as we know it today, was established in 1976. The route begins along the Champs-Élysées, before heading southeast, through the city to the Bois de Vincennes. It then heads back through the city, by the side of the River Seine, before finishing on Avenue Foch.

The Paris Marathon is notable for the particularly scenic route it takes through the iconic city. As they run, participants pass famous landmarks such as the Louvre, Place de la Concorde, and of course the Eiffel tower. Today, the Paris Marathon is an enormously popular race. Its  fast course makes it a bucket list event for many runners. And, with close to 50,000 runners each year, it is the second biggest marathon, by number of finishers, in the world, coming behind the New York City Marathon only.

Paris Half Marathon

Women: 1:07:55 (2012) Pauline Njeri – Kenya

Taking place every year, in March, since 1993, the Paris Half Marathon has quickly taken its place among the city’s many iconic sporting events. With a festive atmosphere and musical entertainment throughout the course, the Paris Half Marathon has also exploded in popularity. Around 40,000 runners register to take on the challenge each year, with around 4,000 coming from overseas. The ‘Semi de Paris’ is a World Athletics Bronze Label race, making it even more popular, and entry even more competitive!

The course of the Paris Half Marathon was recently revamped. In 2021, the race starts and finishes within Paris city centre to add to the buzz of the big day! The start is on the Quais d’Austerlitz, and finish on the Quais François Mauriac (in front of the Bibliothèque François Mitterrand). After the race, you’ll be able to enjoy the many shops, cafes, and terraces, along the banks of the Seine. or you can explore the nearby avenues of this magnificent, renovated quarter of the 13th arrondissement.
