About the Maratona dles Dolomites

One of Italy’s oldest, biggest, and ‘most passionate’ Gran fondo cycling races, the Maratona dles Dolomites was first held in 1987. It was run to mark the first 10 years of the cycling club Societá Ciclistica Alta Badia-Raiffeisen. Only 166 riders participated in that inaugural event. Over the years the Maratona has grown exponentially, both in reputation and in the size of its field. Now the race features 9000 amateur riders, from over 70 countries, who flock to the iconic Dolomite mountain range each year to take on a cycling challenge like no other!

The event is unique, taking those who ride it on a once in a lifetime journey through the striking, jagged rock faces of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the Italian Dolomites.

There are 3 routes on offer to all riders;

  • The Maratona: 138 km long with 4,230 m of altitude
  • The Medium route: 106 km long with 3,130 m of altitude
  • The Sellaronda route: 55 km long with 1,780 m of altitude

However, unlike at other events, everyone sets off together from the village of La Villa. The event starts at 6:30 am, and it takes around half an hour for all riders to pass the start. The Sellaronda route is completed first, featuring 4 mountain passes, after which riders can choose either to retire from the event, or to continue their Dolomites adventure.

The middle course covers a total of 106 kilometres, and takes in en route six stunning mountain passes.

The full Maratona course works as an extension of the preceding Sellaronda and Medium courses, and those who do take on the full course, will ride 138 kms throughout the course of the day, with a total altitude gain of over 4200 metres.

Over the years, the event has become a big deal in Italy, and is now shown on Italian television. On the day, enthusiastic crowds line the course, cheering on the riders in their thousands! This provides them with much needed motivation as they make their way through their individual cycling challenge.

With closed roads, on course nutrition and mechanical support, and some of the best scenery in the world, this event really is Italian cycling at its best!
