Time For New York?

The TCS New York City Marathon is the zenith. The race we all want in our running log. The one we’ll never forget. And you can be there on the start line with 50,000 other running aficionados on Sunday 5 November 2017 for the dream autumn date.

Charlie Chaplin put it simply: “The glamour of it all! New York! America!” But the best-loved British import to the USA nailed it. New York is a mythical city – cosmopolitan is a word that hardly does justice to the sheer range of experiences available in the place they call the Big Apple but if you add turbo-charged, electrifying, breathtaking, theatrical and sensational, you’re maybe getting half way there.

New York is special and it’s home to a special event – the TCS New York City Marathon, the greatest race in the world. Each November 50,000 runners from across the planet make a pilgrimage to America’s most famous city to be part of the unrivaled action.

We spoke to a race veteran to tell us why New York is No.1. Sports journalist Chris Broadbent told us:

“The greatest marathon on the planet?Perhaps. The fastest? Maybe not. The most inspirational? Almost certainly.” “It’s an epic journey covering the city’s five boroughs, the race attracts an enormous crowd of around two million spectators – the majority of whom enjoy the day in fully fledged party mode. Always an event with a strong sense of heritage, its stock rose only further after the tragedy of 9/11 when the marathon came to symbolise the defiance of the famous city.”
“Thousands of British runners descend on New York for the event which has been staged annually since 1970. And for those who secure a coveted place on Sunday 5 November 2017 they are set for one of the loudest, most atmospheric and awe inspiring experiences of their running life. I know, I have raced it. Once you have run the New York Marathon, nothing else quite compares. “I’d liken the experience to being a strange mix of feeling like you are running in the Olympics, at the Glastonbury Festival and on the Jerry Springer Show.”
“It’s spine-tinglingly special with a course that cannot fail to inspire, it’s loud with bands galore booming throughout and the crowd are well, ever so slightly nuts!”
