Race notes from Ron

During my 50 plus years of running, I have ran in over 100 countries and as you can imagine many of them are really different climates, terrains and support from the crowds differ massively.

What I am really pleased to say is that over the past few years, I believe the UKFast City of Salford 10k has grown in numbers of runners but also those supporters around the start and finish line and out on the course – this is so important for every single runner whether they are a 30 minute 10k runner or a fun runner. The course which myself and Graham the Sports Tours International Race Director have come up with is one we hope is pretty flat which will be welcome reading to many of you, but one which takes you past some of the areas biggest and best landmarks.

With MediaCityUK’s transformation in recent years into the an international hub for technology, innovation and creativity – the impressive high rise glass fronted buildings of the BBC and ITV studios gives you the runner a really unique backdrop of the start and finish line. It certainly makes for some great photographs with family and friends! With the areas developments brings a higher demand for transportation links and the UKFast City of Salford 10k course does take into consideration this work, so please rest assured me and Graham work tirelessly to produce the best possible route for you.

For me, I would take on the first 2km of the course at a sensible pace which will mean I have plenty in the tank for the rest of the 10k course, with a couple of nice straight sections at the beginning, taking you out from the Piazza area, onto Broadway and right at the roundabout onto The Quays. Here you will head towards The Lowry Theatre before heading over the bridge and onto the Trafford side of the course. The Imperial War Museum, Coronation Street Studios and Old Trafford Football Stadium are all points of interest to look out for as you wind your way from 3km to 9km.

At various points around the route you will probably find sections where you can speed up and also slow down and conserve some energy for the finish if you need to – the key here is to run your own race and that way you will finish with a great sense of achievement. I always love to hear those lovely comments from the supporters around the route, and this is one of the friendliest I have experienced in a long time so lap it up and be inspired by it.

9km to the finish line is a sight to behold, as you cross back over the BBC Bridge you will hear the clapping and cheering of the supporters and you will all feel those Goosebumps as the finish line nears. Whether you set a target for in and around the one hour mark or you are indeed quicker or slower – its all about enjoying the day, enjoying the experience and finishing with a smile on your face, after all the UKFast City of Salford 10k is well known as the friendliest 10k around.

I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday September 9th as I will be there with the starter horn to set you all off at 10.15am and I may even see some off you in the pub afterwards for a celebratory drink.

INSPIRED TO RUN, TIME TO BOOK!
