Sierre Zinal – The Race of the Five 4000m Peaks

The Sierre – Zinal will return on Saturday 7 August, 2021. It will be the 48th edition of this iconic  race. One of the world’s most scenic mountain running trails, Sierre-Zinal has been hailed as the “New York Marathon” of mountain races. It is also the oldest of the kind in Europe.

Known as the “Race of the Five 4000m Peaks”, Sierre-Zinal takes runners on a Swiss Alpine journey along a daunting 31 km mountain trail. On the way, runners face a 2200 meter elevation gain and a 1100 meter vertical drop. The ingredients that lead to Sierre-Zinal’s enduring success are the stunning scenery, the warm and genial atmosphere, and the overall superb organization of the event. It stands out among the world’s most famous mountain race for good reason!

Golden Trail World Series

Sierre Zinal is part of the Golden Trail World Series More information here. The Golden Trail World Series exists to celebrate and evolve the sport of trail running. The series stands out in the modern sports world respecting unique values like parity, equity, transparency and honesty. These races highlight the most iconic events in the sport today.

Other events in the series are; ZEGAMA-AIZKORRI – 6th June 2021, MARATHON DU MONT-BLANC 27th June 2021, DOLOMYTHS RUN 18th July 2021, SIERRE-ZINAL 7th August 2021, PIKES PEAK MARATHON 22nd August 2021, RING OF STEALL 18th Sept. 2021, THE FINAL GTWS: K42 PATAGONIA-ARGENTINA 6th November 2021.

Sports Tours International are official Tour Operators of the Mont Blanc Marathon (last few remaining entries available for Mont Blanc) and Sierre Zinal. 

In the 2019 race, Kilian Jornet beat Petro Mamu and Jim Walmsley and, in the process, ran a course record time. Maude Mathys (SUI) also broke the women’s record in 2 hours 49 minutes 20 seconds.

2020 Sierre Zinal and the 2021 event

In 2020, faced with unprecedented circumstances, the Sierre Zinal organising committee decided to keep the flame going. They crafted a new version of the race, to cater to the situation. Sierre-Zinal 2020 was held as a free form month-long event, abiding by the restrictions imposed. However, this month-long event, was in now way as thrilling as the iconic one-day race. Which is why SZ organisers wish to resume the regular race format as soon as possible. As the situation remains unpredictable, we are offering options to give all mountain race fans the best SZ experience we can, in 2021.

Only if mass gatherings remain prohibited will a month long version of the race take place. This event would be held from Wednesday 2 August to Sunday 12 September 2021. A decision on the race format will be made by June 30th 2021. Should the committee change the race’s classic format into a month-long event, registrants may expect partial entry fee refunds.

The search is over! It is now time to announce who has won the Sports Tours International, Holidays Fit for Heroes 2020 Christmas campaign!
